Gateway Art

The Gateway Feature consists of six lighted, freeform, icons designed by San Antonio artist Michelle Newman. These sculptures, towering twenty-eight feet above the pavement, flank the main road entering Delray Beach. It was critical that the colors rendered matched Ms. Newman’s original art both under front lighting, during the day, and when back-lit at night.

The work on the columns depicts the geometric patterns often used by Seminoles in textiles and art work. Newman also used gladioli, to represent the long-running Gladioli Festival — now called the Delray Affair — and also pineapples, to represent the city's early history as a pineapple plantation hub.
